Star Gymnasts Kate and Charlie excel!
On March 3rd 2012 Charlie Edwards and Kate Bird competed in their annual grading competition at the GMAC centre in Birmingham.
Charlie Edwards (age 11) competed in the regional qualifier for National Club Grade 8. Charlie gained valuable competition experience from this event battling through injuring her ankle on floor to achieve a pass in her grade.
Charlie showed determination and character to complete her five routines scoring 11.10 in her Range and Conditioning routine and 10.40 on floor to enable her to progress onto Grade 7 next year. Charlie is already in the gym training hard towards the Voluntary levels in the second half of the year.
Kate Bird (age 7) competed in the Compulsory Grade 5 competition. This is a regional competition and provides the foundations of the elite pathway, which ultimately aims towards National squads and the British Championships.
The standard required to even compete with this elite group of 8 year olds is very high and a huge challenge for any gymnast to achieve. Kate is the first gymnast from Star Gymnastics to achieve this and great credit should go to Kate, her coach Louise Platt and her parents and family for their on-going sacrifice and commitment.
This was Kate's first competition on the Regional stage and she competed extremely well achieving 3rd place and a bronze medal with a score of 60.90.
Many congratulations to both girls and all coaches and parents involved at Star Gymnastics!

Regional Championships 2011: GMAC - Sunday 27th November
Star Gymnastics Boys Competition Squad
Louis Ward (Bronze), Guy Joseph (Gold), Dan Lucas (Silver), Ollie Hurst, Tyler Griffiths, Ryan Lawson (Silver)
After months of hard work and many training sessions the boys were finally ready to compete, and with this being many of the boy’s first competition there were a few nerves in the gym.
This was a Men's Artistic six piece competition with 6 clubs from across the region competing against each other. It was the first time the Regional Championships have been held for the West Midlands and was a great competition and experience all round. The boys representing Star Gymnastics were:
- Louis Ward – level 2
- Guy Joseph – level 1
- Dan Lucas – level 1
- Ollie Hurst – level 1 (out of age)
- Tyler Griffiths – level 1 (out of age)
- Ryan Lawson – level 1 (out of age)
As everyone knows by now Louis has competed many times, but for the other five boys this was their first big competition. I’m very pleased to say that all of the boy’s did a fantastic job and delivered some very good routines on the day. The scores were:
| Floor | Pommel | Rings | Vault | Parallel Bars | High Bar | Score | Rank |
| Louis Ward | 12.200 | 11.500 | 11.000 | 11.700 | 12.100 | 13.300 | 71.800 | 3rd |
| Guy Joseph | 13.000 | 11.100 | 11.300 | 11.300 | 11.300 | 10.200 | 68.200 | 1st |
| Dan Lucas | 12.400 | 11.100 | 10.200 | 11.200 | 11.200 | 10.200 | 66.300 | 2nd |
| Ollie Hurst | 11.100 | 9.900 | 9.800 | 10.600 | 8.200 | 10.600 | 60.200 | 12th |
| Tyler Griffiths | 11.900 | 9.900 | 11.700 | 11.300 | 8.600 | 12.800 | 66.200 | 9th |
| Ryan Lawson | 12.100 | 10.500 | 10.800 | 10.900 | 9.600 | 10.300 | 64.200 | 2nd |
A massive well done to all boys, in particular Guy Joseph who won Gold taking the title of Level 1 Regional Champion. The Regional Championships was a great first competition and to finally get out of the gym and compete (and do very well), has made all those tough training sessions worth it. Congratulations to all the boys and keep up the good work.
Unfortunately there is no rest now as the boys are all working towards the Christmas competition held here in the club. They will all be competing against each other using the same routines that they will do next year for grades. Good luck to all who are competing!
